Christian Classical Liberal Arts
Providence Prep, A Scholé Community, located in Purcellville, VA, is a cooperative effort designed to assist home-educating families who wish to provide a Christian classical education for their students. Classical education by definition requires the study of classical languages, so Latin is an integral part of the curriculum. Humanities, comprised of Literature and History and so much more, forms the backbone of our studies. English Language Studies (Grammar and Composition) are based on the classical progymnasmata. In the younger years, we also incorporate many of nineteenth century educator Charlotte Mason’s principles.
“To know what I ought to know, to love what I ought to love.” – Thomas à Kempis
The centerpiece of our curriculum is Humanities, primarily comprising history and literature, but also including geography, fine arts, and philosophy. Our Humanities content has everyone in the family engaging with the same general time period to some extent. Upper School students have weekly assignments to be completed before class. Our Friday class meetings feature discussion, recitation, and student presentations.
Our Humanities focus for 2018-19 at Providence Prep is Antiquity—from the dawn of time to the fall of Rome. Classes are planned for Upper School students (junior high and high school). Lower School classes (K-5th/6th) and preschool classes are offered for the children of Providence Prep teachers.
A classical liberal arts education necessarily requires a mastery of language arts. Our English Studies and Latin Studies provide the perfect pairing to equip students with a mastery of the written and spoken word.
Providence Prep is a Scholé Community. “The Greek word for leisure is scholé (skoh-LAY) . . . ‘restful learning’ that comes from discussion, conversation and reflection among good friends.” ~ Dr. Christopher Perrin, Recovering Leisure in Education
